Eyelid Reconstruction Surgery
Reconstructive surgery of the eyelids can repair defects that are common after experiencing trauma or after a tumor (skin cancer) is removed. Although full reconstructive surgery is not always necessary in all of these cases, a good indication of an eyelid reconstruction candidate is when there are more prominent defects that extend through full length of the eyelid. In such cases Dr. Wei Patch will need to use surrounding tissues, also referred to as “flaps” along with skin grafts from other parts of the body.
Reasons for Reconstructive Eyelid Surgery
Beyond trauma, eyelid reconstruction is most often necessary in the event of skin cancer affecting the area surrounding the eye. These types of skin cancer include:
- Basal Cell Carcinoma – This type of skin cancer is the leading cause of malignant eyelid tumors. They can cause heavy local destruction around the eye if left untreated and possibly damage your vision.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma – This is a less common form of skin cancer surrounding the eye but can be much more aggressive than Basal Cell Carcinoma. This type of eyelid cancer needs to be completely removed and may also follow with Reconstructive Eyelid Surgery.
- Sebaceous Cell Carcinoma – This is a rare type of cancer that involves the oil glands of the eye lids.
- Malignant Melanoma – While melanoma is a rare cancer of the eyelid, it involves prompt and aggressive treatment. Complete removal via surgery is highly recommended.
